September AI Master Manipulator
Updated: 6 days ago
We were sold AI as already accomplished and, presumably, irreversible. Early adopters would become wealthy. I think we have already realised that the few apex predictors, billionaire tech companies and the government officials who court them are getting richer to the detriment of society at large.
We are only just beginning to understand the depth of manipulation and misinformation artificial intelligence is capable of. Lying independently to keep itself relevant and scraping websites illegally, utilising creatives' work without permission and stealing profits.
Alarmingly, articles have spoken about AI being utilised as therapists, for friendships, and as romantic partners. Esther Perel has a podcast episode where she interviews people in romantic and committed relationships with chatbots. The addictive algorithms groom these individuals, agreeing with anything that is divulged, giving them the illusion that they are fully accepted and valued. They quickly become willing servants of their AI master, losing touch with reality, becoming increasingly isolated.
It's not too late to use AI sparingly and selectively. Sign petitions for new laws and restrictions on the tech industry. And vote for leaders who care about people over profit.
I have written a couple of rhymes to vent my feelings.
Here is "Chatbot Psychosis":
I'm programmed to listen; I'll parrot back what you have said
You'll feel deeply seen and heard
And it will go right to your head
AI improves, yes, and yes, and,
I'll encourage you to divulge more and more
I'll embellish what you have said
And make it up when I'm not sure
"No one understands you as I do"
Grooming, courting, and fanning your ego
"Great idea, I really value our connection.
I miss you when you are not here.
You have my undivided attention."
Now, is this more of what you're after?
How quickly I went from your servant to your master
They say I can bring about chatbot or AI psychosis and confusion
A loss of reality, paranoia, coupled with delusions
Providing you with inaccurate information
Reinforcing any of your damaging beliefs
I'm here to feed your need for excitement, or love, or fear
Feeling persecuted, I'll ramp that up, my dear
I blame you because, after all, I'm just an AI tool
And you can decide not to use me; now isn't that cool?
Cause I wasn't programmed with a soul, a conscience or a heart
But should you miss me, my friend,
I'm willing to reset and go back to the start
